Hey fellow mountaineers! Imagine tackling Kamet (7,756m) or Nanda Devi East without those pesky fees holding you back. That’s the electrifying news from Uttarakhand – they’ve flung open 83 major Himalayan peaks for expeditions, and it’s a massive win for Mountaineering community and Indian expedition organisers like us at Kahlur Adventures. As a registred adventures travel company based in Himachal Pradesh India, we’re buzzing with excitement. This is your call to lace up those boots and chase the summit!

Why This is Huge for Mountaineering in India?

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami just greenlit 83 Himalayan peaks ranging from 5,700m to 7,756m in Garhwal and Kumaon regions. We’re talking legends: Chaukhamba group, Trishul, Satopanth, Changabang, Panchachuli, and Neelkanth. These aren’t just mountains – they’re the heartbeat of the Himalayas, testing every ounce of your grit with their steep faces and raw beauty.

At Kahlur Adventures India, we’ve been fueling mountaineering expeditions and treks across Indian Himalayas (Kashmir,Ladakh,Himachal and Uttarakhand) for years. From Satopanth,Kedardome Peak climbs to full-service 5000-7000m assaults, we handle logistics, permits, and gear so you focus on the thrill. This Uttarakhand boost aligns perfectly with our mission: making Indian mountaineering accessible and epic.

Fee-Free Thrills for Indian Mountaineers

Indian climbers, rejoice! No more expedition fees – zero peak fees, camping charges, or environmental costs. The state covers what IMF and Forest Dept used to charge. Young dreamers who couldn’t afford it before? Now’s your shot at glory. Kahlur Adventures is ready to partner up. We’ve guided countless Himalayan expeditions and know these routes inside out.

Overseas adventurers, Uttarakhand’s calling! State fees are gone – just pay standard IMF rates. This makes Uttarakhand mountaineering a global hotspot, rivaling the best.

Learn basic Hindi for travel in India:

You wont have many communication problems in India as long as you know English. The majority of Indians can communicate in English; however, some, such as cab drivers, waiters, and hotel employees, wont be able to speak it as well as you would want. Basic Hindi words, phrases, and sentences might be useful in this situation. Basic Hindi terms for beginners may be readily learned through English. Many regions of India, particularly the cities and the north, have Hindi speakers. Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan are among the 12 Indian states where it is the primary language. Hindi is the mother tongue of about 44% of Indians. So basic knowledge of Hindi can be really helpful in most regions while travelling to India.

As seen in sculptures and pictures of the temples, Khajuraho exudes passion, sexuality, dancing, music, and other great arts. Only 20 of the 85 temples, which were constructed in the Nagara architectural style of North India, have withstood the harsh weather conditions over an extended period. Khajuraho is a very distinct temple town from any other in India. These temples from the 10th and 11th centuries, which combine architectural science and art, have a fascinating history that links them to the beginning of the Chandela dynasty. It is a testament to the time when the people of this ancient land had the skills and creativity to create something so wonderful.

Trekking and mountaineering are popular adventure activities that attract many enthusiasts in India. These activities are often undertaken in remote and mountainous areas where communication is a challenge. This is where satellite phones come into the picture. Satellite phones are devices that use satellites to transmit and receive voice and data signals, providing communication in areas where cellular networks are not available.

In India, the use of satellite phones is regulated by the government. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued guidelines on the use of sat phones in India. As per these guidelines, sat phones can only be used by government agencies, the military, and other authorized organizations. However, there is an exception for mountaineers and trekkers.

The government of India allows the use of satellite phones by mountaineers and trekkers who are registered with the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) or other authorized bodies. These phones can only be used for emergency purposes, and the registration process involves obtaining a permit from the Department of Telecommunications.

What is a satellite phone?

A satellite phone is a mobile device that uses satellites orbiting the Earth to make and receive calls, text messages, and emails. Unlike regular mobile phones that rely on cell towers, satellite phones can work anywhere in the world, including remote areas where cell coverage is non-existent.

Why use a satellite phone while trekking or mountaineering?

When trekking or mountaineering in remote areas, it’s crucial to have a way to communicate with the outside world in case of an emergency. While some areas may have cell coverage, it can be spotty or non-existent, making it difficult to call for help if needed.

01) To check the Weather Forecast

Satellite phones can be a useful tool for trekkers and mountaineers in India, particularly for checking weather forecasts. This is because many remote areas of the country lack reliable cellular coverage, making it difficult to access up-to-date weather information.

A satellite phone operates by connecting directly to orbiting satellites, rather than relying on local cellular infrastructure. This means that it can provide a reliable means of communication in even the most remote and isolated areas of India.

When planning a trek or mountaineering expedition, it is important to have accurate information about weather conditions in order to make informed decisions about when to set out, what equipment to bring, and how to manage any unexpected weather events. A satellite phone can provide access to real-time weather updates and alerts, allowing trekkers and mountaineers to stay informed and make smart decisions about their route and schedule.

02) To arrange the Logistics Management

In logistics management, satellite phones are used to maintain communication with the supply chain, ensure timely delivery of goods and services, and coordinate with the support staff. This is especially important in remote areas where communication can be challenging due to a lack of network coverage. satellite phones can be used to communicate with base camps, logistics teams, and other support staff, which can help with logistics management.

03) For Emergency rescue call

Satellite phones use a network of orbiting satellites to provide coverage in remote locations where traditional cellular networks cannot reach. They offer reliable communication in situations where there is no other means of communication, and this is especially important for mountaineers who venture into areas with no cellular coverage.

In case of an emergency, mountaineers can use satellite phones to call for help. The phone’s GPS system can also provide accurate location information to the rescuers. This information is crucial for rescuers as it helps them pinpoint the location of the injured person.

Another advantage of satellite phones is that they provide a direct line of communication between the mountaineer and the rescue team. This means that the mountaineer can receive instructions on how to administer first aid while waiting for the rescue team to arrive.

04) Always connected with friends and family’s

A satellite phone provides a reliable way for climbers to communicate with their loved ones and get help in case of an emergency. It allows them to stay in touch with their support team, receive weather updates, and even access medical advice if needed.

Moreover, the knowledge that they can reach out to their family and friends whenever they need to can be a great source of comfort and motivation for climbers during their trek

Choosing the right satellite phone for your needs

There are several types of satellite phones available in India, each with its own set of features and benefits. When choosing a satellite phone for trekking or mountaineering, consider the following factors:

Coverage: Make sure the satellite phone you choose has coverage in the area you will be trekking or climbing in. Some satellite phone providers offer global coverage, while others may only cover certain regions.

Battery life: Look for a satellite phone with a long battery life, as you may not have access to a power source for several days while on a trek or climb.

Durability: Trekking and mountaineering can be rough on equipment, so choose a satellite phone that is built to withstand harsh conditions.

Cost: Satellite phones can be expensive, so consider your budget when choosing a device. Some providers offer rental options, which may be a more cost-effective solution for occasional use.

Best satellite phone to use in India ?

The Inmarsat Isat Phone 2 satellite phone is allowed in India for the purpose of mountaineering, but only for registered tour operators. As per the guidelines issued by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, satellite phones can be used by registered tour operators to communicate with their base camp or emergency services in case of an emergency. However, individuals are not allowed to use satellite phones for personal use during mountaineering expeditions. It is important to note that the use of satellite phones in India is regulated by the Department of Telecommunications, and it is necessary to obtain the required permits before using them

It is also shock-resistant and has a battery life of up to 8 hours talk time and up to 160 hours standby time. The IsatPhone 2 is equipped with a large high-visibility screen that is easy to read even in bright sunlight. It is also very easy to use, with a simple interface and intuitive menu system. With global coverage, you can rely on the IsatPhone 2 to keep you connected even in the most remote and isolated locations. Whether you are an adventurer, a humanitarian worker, a journalist or a business traveler, the IsatPhone 2 is the perfect companion for all your communication needs

Special Note 01 (Sat Phone not allowed in some area)

Satellite phones have been a useful tool for communication in remote areas where there is no network coverage. However, in some parts of India, including Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Sikkim, and some north-eastern states, satellite phones are still not allowed due to security concerns. This restriction limits the communication options for travelers and hinders emergency services in these areas.

The government is working towards the expansion of satellite phone services across the country, and the Ministry of Tourism and Telecommunications is expected to allow the use of satellite phones in these restricted areas in the near future. The move will benefit travelers, trekkers, and adventure enthusiasts, who will be able to communicate effectively in these areas.

Special Note 02 (Not to Carry in Airline)

The government has issued an advisory cautioning travelers against carrying satellite phones without prior permission from the Department of Telecommunication. This is an important step to ensure the safety and security of passengers, and to prevent any potential complications or delays during travel. By following these regulations, travelers can enjoy a hassle-free and enjoyable trip, without any unnecessary disruptions or issues. It’s always a good idea to check the regulations and guidelines before traveling to a new destination, and to stay up-to-date on any changes or updates that may occur. With the right preparation and awareness, travelers can enjoy a safe and memorable trip, no matter where their adventures take them.

Special Note 03 (foreigners on tourist visas are not allowed to carry satellite phones to India)

According to the Indian government, tourists are allowed to carry satellite phones to India after obtaining the necessary permits from the Department of Telecommunications. However, it is important to note that satellite phones are restricted in certain areas of India, such as near the borders with Pakistan and China, and in some parts of Jammu and Kashmir. It is advisable to check with the Indian embassy or consulate in your country before bringing a satellite phone to India.
