Expedition Overview

Mount Nanda Devi peak is the highest mountain in the Indian Garhwal Himalaya. Viewed from any angle, the twin peaks of Nanda Devi – Main summit 7816M (25,600ft) and Nanda Devi East 7434M (24,400ft) rise majestically from the center of a ring of peaks that makes up the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. Mt. Nanda Devi peak is also one of the most difficult mountains in the world to reach. No wonder Nanda Devi, Meaning the bliss-giving Goddess, is worshiped locally; the peak is steeped in legend and romance.

Permission to climb the Nanda Devi in the inner Sanctuary has never been easy to get. After the mid-1960 when an attempt was made to install a listening device on the summit for monitoring Chinese nuclear activity on the Tibet side.

There was a short period after 1979 when the sanctuary was opened to international climbers. After that, a no of new routes was open to climb Nanda Devi peaks. Some local shepherds also forged an alternative route into the inner sanctuary, however, all this put pressure and as a result the Govt. decided to close it to mountaineers (Indian as well as International).

List of the peak in the Nanda Devi Sanctuary: The Nanda Devi Sanctuary has a no of a ridge known as the Sanctuary wall, which also encloses the inner Sanctuary part. There are so many peaks standing on these walls.

  • Mount Latu Dhura 6393M (21,000ft)
  • Mount Deo Damla 6620M (21,700ft)
  • Mount Mangroan 6568M (21,500ft)
  • Mount Rishi Pahar 6992M (22,900ft)
  • Mount Kalanka 6991M (22,900ft)
  • Mount Changabang 6864M (22,500ft)
  • Mount Duna Giri 7066M (23,000ft)
  • Mount Bethartoli Himal 6352M (20,800ft)
  • Mount Bethartoli South 6318M (20,700ft)

At present no Indian or International climbers are allowed to climb Mount Nanda Devi peak, but peaks on the Sanctuary walls can be climbed from ‘outside the Sanctuary. It allows the climbers to attempt Nanda Devi East. , Mount Changabang, Mount Kalanka, Mount Trishul and Mount Maiktoli. You can climb many of the peaks surrounding the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, only the main peak Mount Nanda Devi not allowed to climb. To climb any of these peaks in the area you need to get a permit from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, and a liaison officer must your expedition to the base camp and possibly remain with you until you have completed your climb. An agency, such as Kahlur Adventures, can secure climbing permits and provide other logistic support to summit the peak safely and successfully.
