Mount Kilimanjaro’s beauty is unparallel to any other mountain peak in the world. As the highest mountain in Africa, it is also the world’s tallest free-standing mountain. Located in Tanzania, Mt Kilimanjaro has attracted many mountaineers to its charm. What makes Kilimanjaro quite interesting is that it is a dormant volcano. The expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro is not an easy feat but with the will to accomplish an exceptional goal, many adventurous mountaineers attempt to summit this sturdy mountain peak. Popularly known as the “Common Man’s Everest”, this trek will give a dramatic change in the landscapes. You will come across cultivated fields, moorlands, rainforests, and even alpine deserts. As you keep moving ahead, you will get to witness arctic snowfields and glaciers as well. It usually takes 7 days, and 6 nights to complete the expedition to Mt Kilimanjaro. We will take you through the most scenic and exciting route on this trek through Machame Route which is also known as the Whiskey Route. You need to be familiar with trekking and mountaineering to be allowed to commence on this trek as the terrain is gruelling and the weather could be really unreliable. Although climbing Mt Kili’s demanding peaks is not an easy feat and requires prior experience and familiarity with mountaineering. DETAILS ITINERARY OF MOUNT KILIMANJARO (MACHAME ROUTE):

Day 01 – Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha

On the first day, you will arrive at the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and meet up with Kahlur Adventures’ representative. You will be taken to a pre-booked hotel in Arusha. You also get a brief idea of the important points of the trek from the tour leader and the entire team. Later on, you can enjoy roaming around in the city of Arusha. You will stay here for the night after dinner.

Day 02 – Arusha to Machame Gate | Elevation: 1490 M to Machame Camp | Elevation: 2980 M

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, the drive from Arusha to Machame Gate will begin. The drive is about 2 hours long and will keep you engaged with the beautiful views of Chagga Village, Banana and Coffee plantation and you will get a peek at Tanzania’s daily life. As you reach Machame Gate, some paperwork will be done by our representative and you will sign Tanzanian National Parks Authority (TANAPA)’s official book to begin your climb. From here, you will officially commence climbing the Kilimanjaro Expedition. On this hike, you will walk through a rainforest past Kilimnajro’s red giant ferns and other local flora. After reaching the first camp, you will take a break for lunch which is pre-packed by Kahlur Adventures and rest for a bit. Then you will start hiking through the jungle past gargantuan trees and ferns. As you keep moving ahead, the path will become narrower and steeper. After climbing for about an hour, you will come across the moorland zone. After a hike of almost 6 hours, you will reach Machame Camp, your abode for the night. Here, you will have some tea/coffee and snacks. You can walk around and enjoy the views of snowclad Kibo peaks. After dinner, you will retire in your tent.

Day 03 – Machame Camp | Elevation: 2980 M to Shira Camp |Elevation: 3840 M

Today you will have your breakfast in the moorland and later you could hike to 3200 M beyond the large rock formations obstructs to catch a mesmerising of Machame village and the camp. After that, you will begin your hike towards Shira Camp. The amazing views of Kilimanjaro will keep you motivated as you move ahead and start gaining elevation. At the elevation of 3400 M, there will be a small break in the hike for lunch and rest as the air starts becoming thinner. Post lunch and some rest, the hike continues and you will walk through different vegetation and black lava sand. You will walk up and down small mountains, streams and rocky walls and even deep gorges. The landscape keeps changing as you keep moving forward on today’s trek. Once you reach the destination of today Shira Camp, you can take some much-needed rest. Shira Camp is located in the middle of the Shira plateau and nearby there is Shira Cathedral and Shira Hill. You can explore these nearby locations with your Kahlur Adventures’ Tour Operator after you have had your tea and snacks. You will have your dinner under the glimmering skylight and get a small briefing of the next day.

Day 04 – Shira Camp | Elevation: 3840 M to Lava Tower | Elevation: 4630 M to Barranco Camp | Elevation: 3950 M

The day ahead is quite exciting and after breakfast, you will begin trekking south of Shira/Lemosho route. You will walk over a black lava desert and over millions of rocks. The elevation to reach today is 4630 M and you will have to reach the lava tower. After climbing for a few hours, there will be a small pause for lunch and during that, you will get an astonishing view of the snowline above the lava tower. The perfect silence here ensures that you hear each beat of your heart and the songs of the wind. Later on, by using the technique of climbing high and sleeping low you will lower the altitude of 680 m, and you will continue heading to Barranco Camp. As you start descending, you will find the tropical giant herbs, heath and moorland. You will reach the Barranco Camp after hiking for almost 7 hours. From your camp, you can see the great Barranco wall, the window and the southern glacier up close. Watching the sunset from here as nature paints the sky in various colours will give you immense joy. After dinner, you will rest for the night in your tent.

Day 05 – Barranco Camp | Elevation: 3950 M to Karanga Camp | Elevation: 4250 M

This day will start early to avoid the traffic jam at the Barranco wall. After breakfast, you will begin walking on gravel and sand oath through the rocky moors. On the way, you will walk past many streams, grass, herbs and giant stones. You will need around 1 to 1.5 hours to climb the Wall. From the top, you will see the barren and rocky plateau that lies behind the wall. Along with it, you will also get to enjoy the spectacular views of Kibo as well as the three southern glaciers. After climbing for 2 to 3 hours, you will reach your destination for the day which is Karanga Camp at an altitude of 4250 M. You will have lunch with the backdrop of routes for the upcoming days of this expedition. You will get enough time for acclimatization and after dinner under the open sky, you will stay here overnight.

Day 06 – Karanga Camp | Elevation: 4250 M to Barafu Camp | Elevation: 4600 M

Today you will hike for about 3 hours to get to Barafu Camp which is at an altitude of 4600 M. Post breakfast, you will leave behind the Karanga Camp and proceed to a vertical ridge up to Barranco wall. You will keep moving through Karanga valley to the junction that joins the Mweka trail. When you reach the Barafu Hut, you will officially complete the South circuit and from here you will witness the summit from various angles. Since there is no water at this camp and it is situated on a rocky ridge, exposed to all the extremes of nature, climbers will be placed in their tents before dark for their safety. You will have dinner early to rest your limbs and prepare for the next day by getting good sleep. You will also get a briefing for the next day by Kahlur Adventures’ guide before you retire to your tent.

Day 07 – Summit Day – Barafu Camp | Elevation: 4600 M to Uhuru Peak | Elevation: 5895 M to Mweka Camp | Elevation: 3100 M

Today we will start early and wake up at midnight to start the day of the summit. You will have some snacks before starting the most exhilarating day on this expedition. You will begin the ascend towards Kilimanjaro in the silence of the night and the weather will be freezing. The route ahead is sharp and you will climb over rocks to reach the rim of the crater. As the early morning rays will create awe-inspiring views across the ice formation at sunrise, you will keep moving towards Rebmann Glaciers and Hans Mayer Point. It usually takes 5 to 6 hours and you will reach Stella point which is at an altitude of 5740 M and just 150 metres ahead of here, you will reach the summit. As you will keep moving forward towards your ultimate destination of this expedition, you will see the summit sign of Mount Kilimanjaro. As you take in the panoramic views from the highest point on the continent of Africa, you will feel that all your struggles to cope with the challenging climate and long exhausting trek have been worth it. After resting for a while on the summit, you will start descending along the crater rim and towards Stell point and continue to keep walking till Rebman Glacier. You will follow the same route that you took while reaching the summit till you reach Barafu Camp. Here you will have lunch and take some rest before starting your descent towards Mweka Camp. You will reach the Mweka Camp late in the afternoon. You will stay the night here and relax after some tea/coffee and snacks followed by dinner served by Kahlur Adventures.

Day 08 – Mweka Camp | Elevation: 3100 M to Mweka Gate | Elevation: 1980 M

This is your last breakfast amidst a natural landscape so you will enjoy your scrumptious meal here and begin your 3 hours hike. You will walk for about 10 km to reach Mweka Gate and make a great descent while doing that. A souvenir photographer is clicked of the whole team at the gate to freeze this accomplishment for priority. You will get to walk through a well-established forest road and across rain forest and its flora and fauna. At the Mweka gate, you will be handed your trekking certificates and you will sign out. Kahlur Adventures’ tour guide will sort through the details for your convenience. Trekkers who have successfully reached Stella point on this trek will be awarded a green certificate and those who summit Uhuru peak will be awarded a gold certificate. Here you get to click pictures and celebrate with fellow mountaineers. After that, you will be driven to the Hotel in Arusha pre-booked for you. Here you will spend the night and get to have a proper relaxing time.

Day 09 – Departure from Kilimanjaro

On the last day of this tour, you will check out from the hotel after having your breakfast. Depending on your booking of the flight’s time and location, our representative will drop you at Kilimanjaro International or Arusha Airport. You will say goodbye to Kahlur Adventures’ team and fly home with beautiful memories of this trek and will soon meet us for another adventure.

  • Important Documents: Yellow Fever Vaccination and COVID-19 Vaccination certificate.
  • Insurance: Adventure Insurance with helicopter evacuation must needed document for the permit.

When you have firmly decided to undertake the Tour with Kahlur Adventures, you will need to book the trip with us. We must allocate enough time to prepare, obtain necessary documents and permits, and book hotels and Transport for the trip.

50% Amount one month prior of arrival in India
25% Amount to be one week prior of arrival in India

Cancellation Policy:

• If the cancellation is made 30 days before the tour starts, 25% of the full payment will be deducted and 75% will be refunded.
• If the cancellation is made 20 days before the tour start, 35% of the full payment will be deducted and 70% will be refunded
• If the cancellation is made 07 days before the tour start, 80% will be deducted and 20% will be refunded.
• No refund is made if the trip is cancelled after the departure for Expedition.
• No refund is made during the running tour.
• The cost of travel permit or any other documentation charges will not be refundable
