The history of the seven summits is quite intriguing. Due to a certain disagreement between the two earliest mountaineers Richard Bass and Reinhold Messner, there are 2 separate lists being Bass list and the Messner list. Both these lists have 6 peaks that are common in them. The very first person to climb the seven summits successfully was Richard Bass from 1983 to 1985. He started his historic journey from Cerro Aconcagua in South America (6962 M), McKinley Denali in North America (6194 M), Kilimanjaro in Africa (5895 M), Elbrus in Europe (5642 M), Mt. Vinson in Antarctica (4892 M), Mt. Kosciuszko in Australia/Oceania (2228 M) and finally to Mt. Everest in Asia (8850 M).
He, later on, co-authored a book about his journey with Frank Wells and Rick Ridgeway about his experience. But soon, a controversy came to light regarding the 7 summits. Depending on the geological, geographical, and geopolitical limits, it was in question whether Mt. Blanc in France (4807 M) or Elbrus in Russia is the highest summit in Europe. Another confusion was around Mt. Kosciuszko in Oceania and Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia (4884 M) and in Messner’s list Carstensz Pyramid is more deserving as the 7th summit. Reinhold Messner was the second person to climb the seven summits and completed his journey in 1986.
Messner was the one who claimed that the Carstensz Pyramid was more technical and meritorious of being on the list of seven summits. Hence, Messner’s list. Although he climbed all the above-mentioned mountains for the sake of future generations. Over time Messner’s list has gained more popularity. The first female mountaineer that climbed all the seven summits was Junko Tabei from Japan in 1992. And since then, many people of different nationalities, disabilities, medical conditions, etc have made their mark on the world by mountaineering by climbing the seven summits.
