Hey fellow mountaineers! Imagine tackling Kamet (7,756m) or Nanda Devi East without those pesky fees holding you back. That’s the electrifying news from Uttarakhand – they’ve flung open 83 major Himalayan peaks for expeditions, and it’s a massive win for Mountaineering community and Indian expedition organisers like us at Kahlur Adventures. As a registred adventures travel company based in Himachal Pradesh India, we’re buzzing with excitement. This is your call to lace up those boots and chase the summit!

Why This is Huge for Mountaineering in India?

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami just greenlit 83 Himalayan peaks ranging from 5,700m to 7,756m in Garhwal and Kumaon regions. We’re talking legends: Chaukhamba group, Trishul, Satopanth, Changabang, Panchachuli, and Neelkanth. These aren’t just mountains – they’re the heartbeat of the Himalayas, testing every ounce of your grit with their steep faces and raw beauty.

At Kahlur Adventures India, we’ve been fueling mountaineering expeditions and treks across Indian Himalayas (Kashmir,Ladakh,Himachal and Uttarakhand) for years. From Satopanth,Kedardome Peak climbs to full-service 5000-7000m assaults, we handle logistics, permits, and gear so you focus on the thrill. This Uttarakhand boost aligns perfectly with our mission: making Indian mountaineering accessible and epic.

What is Winter Mountaineering?

Winter mountaineering is a specialized form that occurs in snowy and icy conditions, presenting unique challenges and requiring specific skills and equipment. This activity typically involves ascending mountains during the winter months, where climbers must navigate through snow, ice, and potentially harsh weather conditions. In contrast to climbing in warmer months, winter mountaineering involves navigating snowy and icy conditions, requiring specialised equipment such as crampons and ice axes, and advanced skills to handle the additional challenges of snow and ice on the terrain. In the winter, mountain climbing is a completely different game than in the summer. Every action must be carefully considered because of the bitter cold, challenging ice portions, erratic avalanches, and constantly shifting weather. Improved navigation skills, proficient route-finding, and an unwavering mentality are necessary for winter climbing. Winter ascents need greater self-sufficiency than the well-worn paths and routes seen during the busiest climbing season. Because of how harsh, untamed, and cruel the mountains are, the achievement is all the more satisfying.

If you are looking for some solitude in the lap of nature, Winter mountaineering is perfect for you. Days may pass before you encounter another human. The unparalleled seclusion provides an unadulterated, unbroken connection to the mountains. Snow mountaineering is about pushing oneself outside your comfort zone and not about comfort. You are forced to improve as a climber, a person, and your connection to nature with every difficulty, from technical ice climbing to freezing temps. The way your body adjusts to harsh conditions is among the most intriguing features of mountaineering’s cold exposure. Brown fat enters the picture here. Your body becomes more adept at managing stress, burning more calories, and staying warm on its own the more time you spend in chilly conditions. Because their brown fat is completely engaged, seasoned winter mountaineers frequently feel more at ease in extremely low temperatures. you should train your body for cold exposure, and fuel yourself with high-calorie, cold-resistant food.

On January 16, 2021, an all-Nepali crew under the leadership of Mingma Gyalje Sherpa and Nirmal Purja accomplished this historic accomplishment. K2 was the last of the 8,000-meter peaks (sometimes referred to as Eight-thousanders;) to be climbed in the bitter cold, having never before been reached by a climber. But the most important thing to keep in mind is that not everyone dares to attempt because of the severe winter weather, which is less crowded but extremely cold. However the difficulty level and added challenges that has seen a recent influx of daredevil mountaineers and climbers who are looking to claim this rare accolade to their name. Kahlur Adventures is offering the golden opportunity to fulfil your dream of Winter mountaineering in India. With a team of esteemed mountaineers and climbers, you will go on a life-changing trip that will transform you in all positive ways.

Winter Mountaineering in India:

Around the world, winter mountaineering is quite popular. Many climbers participate in winter driving adventures, ice-skating expeditions, and ski mountaineering trips. Winter climbing became even more popular after the summit of Mount K2 in the winter. India’s most visited winter destinations include the hill states and Union Territories (UT), including Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, and Jammu Kashmir. Uttarakhand is renowned for its winter treks, Himachal Pradesh for its ice climbing, ski mountaineering, winter jeep safari, Kashmir for skiing and snowboarding, and Ladakh for its ice hockey. Since winter climbing has become so popular, we at Kahlur Adventures have been promoting winter mountaineering in India. Come join us to climb 5,000 M, 6,000 M and 7,000 M Mountains of India in winter.

For the 2025 session, we announced our first winter expedition to the non-technical Mount Kiagar Ri 6,100 M in the Ladakh Himalaya, which we summited on January 1, 2025. Mr. Pankaj Chandel, the founder of Kahlur, is a trained mountaineer and is leading the winter climb. Team Kahlur and Mr Pankaj have been searching for winter mountaineering peaks for the past three years as part of a mission to promote mountaineering in India. Pankaj discovered that there are mountains in India that are suitable for all skill levels. If you are exceptionally skilled, there is a good challenge mountain, or if you are looking for an easy climb, a peak like Kiagar Ri at 6,100 M is ideal.

Climbing in the winter has a special fascination because of the meeting of snow and towering rock cliffs. With Kahlur, an elite mountaineering company in India, you will be climbing some of the most stunning and demanding peaks. Kahlur Adventures, pioneers of mountaineering in India provides a variety of climbs for all skill levels, including several ascents that are appropriate for people who have never worn crampons and an ice axe. The best thing about winter mountaineering is that it is not exclusive to seasoned mountaineers and climbers. However, we welcome all the climbers around the world to join us for a winter mountaineering expedition for an exciting winter adventure in India and feel the rush of adrenaline.

List of Mountains for Winter Climbing in India

Mount Kiagar Ri 6100 M:

For all avid mountaineers and environment enthusiasts worldwide, Mount Kiagar Ri, also called Kyagar Kangri, is a dream destination. Mt. Kiagari, a 6,100-meter peak in India, is well-known for its high-altitude trekking and the untamed landscape of the Trans-Himalayan area. Kiagar Ri mountain is an easy-to-climb 6,000 M mountain in Ladakh, India, close to the Korzok settlement. It offers a peaceful and adventurous experience. A taste of high- altitude climbing that is often only experienced by skilled climbers and mountaineers can be had by scaling Kiagar Ri Peak.

Unique among Indian expeditions over 6000 meters, Kyagar Kangri Peak is appropriate for both novice and expert climbers. Additionally, it is the greatest substitute for the Stok Kangri trip. There is a fantastic chance to experience winter climbing in India and Ladakh with this excursion. Although the 6000-meter Kyagar Kangri Expedition in India is quite simple to ascend, it might test your resolve. This hike is made more difficult by the steep terrain and erratic weather. But with the best mountaineering company in India, Kahlur Adventures you will be under the guidance of expert trek leaders.

With vistas of snow-capped mountains in the background, the trip through the Ladakh highlands will take you through a variety of landscapes, including lush meadows, arid slopes, gorgeous valleys, and crystal-clear lakes. It is uncommon to see the vegetation and wildlife on this walk elsewhere. Rare, vibrant flowers, Himalayan marmots, blue sheep, and a variety of bird species might be encountered. The captivating Tso Moriri Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world, is a key highlight of the Mt Kiagar Ri trek. It is advisable to be aware of the warning signs and worst-case scenarios of our adventurous journeys, even though there are instances when your body defies all assumptions and scientific theories. Additionally, you should not assume you won’t have it on your subsequent.

high-altitude quest just because you didn’t have it on the previous time. “The adage prevention is better than cure” holds in the mountains. You must be mindful of severe mountain sickness when trekking or mountaineering in high-altitude areas. The indications and symptoms are present whether climbing the major Himalayan peaks, Andes, or any high-altitude mountains, however, we are unable to pinpoint exactly which sort of individual is affected. Every mountaineer’s body reacts individually to the elements of nature. It is normal to experience its effects and there is no way to avoid it, but to be safe, have fun, and finish your journey, it is crucial to abide by the rules and precautions.

Last but not least, it would be prudent to treat altitude sickness locally. We can exchange a few local tips:

01) On a Himalayan trip, garlic soups are the greatest. The natural qualities of garlic help thin your blood, which promotes improved circulation.
02) Avoid napping throughout the day, try to manage the pain, and drink some warm water or jasmine tea.
03) Potato wedges with spicy chutney (a regional ingredient) relieve headaches if you can handle a little heat.
04) Although it rhymes, Dal Bhat Power 24 Hours undoubtedly has advantages. You get the energy and strength you need to climb Indian slopes thanks to the carbohydrates.
05) Finally, when you stop for the night, check your body oxygen levels. One set of fingertip oxygen level checkers will be carried by each of our local guides to ensure
that your body is getting the proper amount of oxygen. They will offer you recovery advice and provide the additional care you require based on that and their experience.
06) Keep your oxygen level chart updated as it will be helpful in the long run. The chart will keep you in check with any variations in the oxygen levels.
07) keep discussing your health with your Guides or the climbing team.

India’s diverse terrain offers mountaineering opportunities on peaks above 5000 M, 6000 M, and 7000 M, ideal for both technical and non-technical expeditions. Before high-altitude attempts, assess your body’s response through smaller hikes. The Indian Himalayas feature many semi-technical 6000 M mountains suitable for climbing.

Mount Nun Overview:

At 7135 meters, Mount Nun, surrounded by neighbouring mountain peaks in Ladakh’s Zanskar valley, gleams with its snow-capped head. One of the tallest Himalayan mountain peak in Kargil – Leh Ladakh (UT), Mount Nun, is directly adjacent to its twin counterpart, Mount Kun. It takes prior experience and knowledge with climbing equipment to climb the challenging peaks of Mount Nun. Adventuresome mountain enthusiasts can fulfil their ambitions of climbing Mount Nun Peak in India with the help of Kahlur Adventures. The mountaineers trying to undertake this difficult job are put to the test by the frequently harsh and erratic weather conditions on Nun Peak India.

Mount Nun proudly draws your attention with its stunning brilliance as soon as you arrive in Leh, and you can see it the entire way to Tangol Village. In addition to the demanding creation of glaciers, icefall slopes, towering ice walls, sharp-edged ridges, high cliffs, and dramatic weather changes, the climb to Nun peak 7135 M is full of unexpected obstacles that keep you on your toes. All the 7000 M mountains in India are somewhat challenging, but the Mt. Nun trip can be extremely taxing if you have never climbed a technical mountain peak before. You must be both emotionally and physically prepared for this challenge. For this reason, you must have a mountaineering certification or comparable high-altitude climbing expertise.

Mount Nun and Kun India

The snowy plateau that separates India’s Mount Nun Kun Massif Peak and Mount Kun is 14 kilometers long by drive only. About 289 kilometers from Leh, in the Suru Valley, is this massif, which is part of the Kargil area. The Mount Nun adventure is fascinating because it provides you with a taste of what it would be like to ascend some of the world’s highest mountain peaks, including Mount Everest (8849 M) or another 14X8000 or Seven Summit Climbs. In 1953, Pierre Vittoz and Claude Kogan, a trailblazing female mountaineer, made the first-ever trip to the magnificent Mount Nun. At Kahlur Adventures, we provide a fully guided trip to Mount Nun because we believe that every climber with lofty aspirations should have the resources to realize them.

This harsh terrain is made much more unfavourable by the bitterly cold temperatures and strong winds. It takes a specific skill set and mental and physical fortitude to climb this 7000-meter peak in India. But you’re safe with the help of the knowledgeable group leader from Kahlur Adventures. The Nun trip is very well-liked by daring mountaineers because of its difficult nature. The strong wind propels you in all directions, and the weather might change drastically in a few hours, so you receive a good dose of adrenaline.

04) How is Kahlur operating the Nun expedition differently?

The team at Kahlur Adventures consists of skilled trekkers and mountaineers who are well familiar with the Himalayas. You need the direction of experts who are equipped to handle any emergency that may arise during a strenuous adventure like Mount Nun.

05) How many climbing routes are there to climb Nun Peak?

After 2023, the majority of the expedition team will ascend Mount Nun via the left ridge, however, there are two routes: the left ridge and the right ridge. The team also determines the route; if someone wishes to climb Nun Peak by a different path, team Kahlur offers complete logistical support.

06) Why is Mount Nun easy and safest for an 8000M expedition?

A climber must have solid experience on a 7000-meter peak to ascend an 8000-meter peak. This will allow him or her to test their technical climbing abilities and get experience at elevations higher than 7000 meters. Climbing in the Indian Himalayas is a unique experience in and of itself. Seeing Incredible India and experiencing its cuisine and culture is equally unique. Pre-training in the high-altitude Indian Himalayas is always a good idea because climbing any 8000 M peak requires a minimum budget of USD 25,000, and if you don’t plan it well, all of that money will be wasted. Even from a financial standpoint, climbing 7000 M mountains is far less expensive than climbing any other Himalayan nation.

07) What level of experience and qualifications are required for climbers to safely participate in the Nun Peak 7135M expedition? Additionally, is it necessary for climbers to be accompanied by professional guides?

International climbers must have at least 5000 meters of climbing experience or strong technical climbing expertise, whereas Indian climbers must have a basic advanced mountaineering certificate. Indeed, having experienced guides with you during a mountain climb is usually beneficial. Their duties are limited to opening routes and carrying supplies, but they also provide excellent companionship and moral support, teach you some new climbing techniques, and help you handle emergency switch actions.

08) What is the number of high camps established for the Nun expedition?

The high-altitude circumstances become unpredictable once you start mountaineering. Plans are continuously revised to reflect the current circumstances. It’s challenging to provide set day-by-day schedules, as we do for treks. However, in general, the itinerary includes camp rotation cycles, which are a common acclimatization procedure on high-altitude trips. Three camps on Mount Nun are located 5,550, 6,100, and 6,400 meters above the base camp.

Camp 1: At 5500 meters above sea level, Camp 1 is 900 meters higher than Base Camp. After crossing the river to the opposite side of the campgrounds, the first part of this trek consists of a 2-hour hike up a steep rocky slope. You need to closely follow the instructions of Kahlur Azdventures’ trek leader. Although there are many rocks and pebbles in this section, the trail is quite well-designed, which makes the climb a little less bleak. The 2-hour trek requires you to walk on enormous stones as you ascend the mountain ridge and descend to the opposite side; proceed with caution until you reach a location known as “Crampon Point.” This notorious point is a huge rock with a little hole at the bottom, which makes it the ideal location to keep all the equipment safe from rain and ferocious winds.

The 300-meter stretch of a 75-degree gradient ice wall between Base Camp and Camp 1 is the most demanding. There is another stretch of steep ice that must be negotiated after the first wall. The slopes become a little softer and the snow a little softer when we pass the ice wall and its annexe. After that, you make a right turn, cross a few gulfs, and arrive at a place where the slope approaches 30 degrees. This marks the beginning of the country of hidden crevasses and the conclusion of the fixed rope segment. Camp 1 is situated in the centre of a snowfield that is 4 km wide. After a while, it feels like you’re going into oblivion as you traverse the long, level terrain. After departing Base Camp, you should arrive at your tents in five to six hours.

Camp 2: Between Camps 1 and 2, the route is a continuous, straight climb with 60–70 degree grades. It should take the climbers an average of nine hours to complete the full climb, which is a 600-meter height increase from Camp 1. You will be on the front point for most of the ascent, depending on the snow’s texture! However, negotiating sizable boulder and rock portions while wearing crampons continues to be the most challenging aspect of the ascent.

Despite all of these issues, Camp 2 is utterly captivating. Without a doubt, some of the most breathtaking and exciting high-altitude campsites can be found on Mount Nun. However, Camp 2 stands out among the three. It creates the fun of a Black Jack movie while giving you the tension of a 007 movie. Tents on Camp 2 are hanging in midair, perched on a narrow, sloping ridge of a towering pinnacle. Look up and you will find that the campsite has some of the most spectacular vistas they have ever seen in the morning and evening. Camp 2 may surpass the summit itself because of the breathtaking views it offers. Sitting there with an unhindered view of the snowfield below, the cloud show is breathtaking.

Camp 3: At 6400 meters, Camp 3, often known as the Summit Camp, is 300 meters higher vertically than Camp 2. But after navigating the treacherous mountains to get to Camp 2, it should not feel too exhausting. The remainder of the route consists primarily of snow dunes that rise and fall at a gradient of no more than 40 degrees, following the initial steep descent from the campsite. Camp 3 is situated in the centre of a snowfield, just like Camp 1. It should take you almost six hours to travel from Camp 2 to Camp 3.

Summit Push: Since the ice is at its most stable throughout the night, it is crucial to travel as far as you can during this time, just like on any other summit. Between eleven and midnight, you begin the ascent. As you concentrate on the ascent and the objective at hand, maybe all of the tension and anxiety from the physical and emotional strain you have placed on your body over the last few days will melt away in the nighttime silence. From Summit Camp, you will reach the west ridge by crossing 40–60 degree ice before the gradient drops to 40–50 degrees. Because of the crampons, the final portion with the big boulders is very challenging. After the intense physical and emotional exhaustion from hours of climbing, it is quite difficult to support your weight and drag yourself over the enormous boulders. But after navigating the boulders, the remaining distance to the summit is only about 50 meters. It should take 14 to 16 hours to travel back and forth between Summit Camps.

Camp 3 to Base Camp: This will be a long day. Early in the morning, after breakfast, be ready for really steep descents. Depleted energy tends to defocus your thoughts, so try to maintain the same level of concentration as you would while climbing the mountain because descents can be dangerous. It will take about 8 to 10 hours to reach the Base Camp.

09) What level of training and experience is required for the Mount Nun expedition climb? Can you provide guidance on an appropriate training plan?

Being in excellent physical condition is crucial when organizing any high-altitude excursion, and the Nun expedition is no exception. A consistent, well-organized training program ought to be put into action. To be ready for this adventure, you can either use the offered training plan or work with a personal trainer in person or virtually. Step-up ladders, which are used to ascend steep faces at high altitudes, can be used to simulate walking.

We strongly advise concentrating on strength, core, and endurance training. Some of the recommended training methods include aerobic workouts like long-distance running (50–60 km+) or cycling (100–160 km weekly), as well as hiking long distances (8–12 hours) with elevation gain while carrying 15-20 kg weights. Training for muscle endurance and strength is also essential. One of the greatest exercises for this is a kettlebell routine. We suggest planning your training at least Three to Five months before the date you plan to go climbing.

10) Recommended clothing and gear – boot required for Nun expedition climb (trekking and mountaineering)? Can I rent gear for the Nun Peak climb?

Kahlur Adventures doesn’t provide the climbing equipment on rent, But we can connect you with some of the providers like the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, etc. An essential component of a successful peak or mountain climb is having good, sturdy equipment. To assist you in your ascent, we have compiled a list of the essential mountain climbing equipment. Before adding or removing anything from your duffel, please carefully analyze each item and make sure you understand how each piece of equipment works. Remember that our 6000 M and other 7000+ expedition leaders have meticulously produced this list. Don’t skimp on the equipment’s quality. The equipment described below is for Himalayan and mountain peaks between 5000 and 7000+ meters. The recommended essential equipment for difficult situations is the expeditions that we execute at Kahlur Adventure (Nun Kun Peak, Satopanth Peak, Mount Nanda Devi East, and Papsura Climb, The Mountains of India).

11) What types of foods are available during the Mount Nun Expedition? Is clean water available and how much water intake is recommended? Hydration and nutrition recommendation.

Since we at Kahlur Adventures have been hosting mountaineering trips in the Indian Himalayas for many years and have hosted visitors from all over the world, we are aware that the most crucial aspects of an expedition are proper nutrition, food, and clean water.
12) Recommended insurance cover for Mount Nun 7135 M Expedition. Do I need helicopter evacuation to be included in my insurance coverage?

As per the rule of the India Mountaineering Foundation, Indian or International climbers require Adventure Insurance cover (helicopter evacuation) to climb any mountain in India.
14) How many tips do you suggest for guides and porter teams? Summit tips? . . .

Since tipping is the most frequently asked issue by climbers, there are no set guidelines in India; instead, it is entirely up to the visitor. The recommended tip range for Summit is $300 to $700 per person.

Additionally, visitors provide porters with much-needed hiking gear, including helmets, gloves, trek poles, and jackets. Since we mostly employ locals from Tangol village in Kargil, climbers can also make direct donations to the government office or local NGO for things like children’s education.

15) Can my friends and family join me on the trek into Nun Base Camp?

Yes, they can accompany you on the trip, but they will have to pay for the base camp services. Alternatively, they can do the local Leh Ladakh tour and end up joining you.
